Mexican Independence Day and National Guacamole Day will take place on Tuesday, September 16. Coincidence? We think not! We’ve compiled a list of our favorite San Diego restaurants and bars for those that want to celebrate both holidays with some chips and a bowl of guacamole.

Guacamole has been a palate-pleaser since the 1500s, when the Aztecs created an avocado mixture they called "ahuaca-mulli.” Spanish explorers couldn’t get enough of the New World’s zesty green delicacy and decided to bring the recipe back to their homeland. The rest was literally history. Whether you’re a fan of the spicy rendition or its mild and mellow counterpart, celebrate your love of all things guac at some of your favorite San Diego restaurant and bars on September 16 for National Guacamole Day!

Start your meal off right with Ortega’s, A Mexican Bistro’s Table Side Guacamole that is half-priced on National Guacamole Day. This classic starter is prepared with fresh avocado, tomato, onion, cilantro, jalapeño, puréed roasted garlic and grilled lime. Located in Hillcrest on the corner of Third and University, stop by Ortega’s on September 16 for $2 margarita Tuesdays that is the perfect complement to the guac and the Baja-style cuisine.

Nachos Gigante - the name is really all you need to know. The Pacific Beach Shore Club classic offers up a generous helping of house-made chips topped with mixed cheese, sour cream, guacamole, pico de gallo, cilantro, jalapenos and served on a layer of refried beans. If papas fritas—aka French fries—are more your thing, try the Southern California fries that piles chili, cheese and guacamole on top of a mound of seasoned French fries. Feeling especially carnivorous? Add your choice of carne asada or chicken to top it off.

It wouldn’t be the south-of-the-border cuisine we know and love without a taco…or five. Sandbar Sports Bar & Grill offers them up TKO style, with your choice of local fish (grilled or baja-style), marinated carne asada, braised carnitas, grilled chicken or sautéed shrimp. It’s wrapped up in a cotija-crusted flour tortilla and top with chipotle aioli, beer-brined escabeche slaw, lime crema, spicy guacamole, tobacco onions and fried cilantro.

Guacamole lovers looking to enjoy their favorite condiment on tacos with a twist, look no further than ViVa Bar + Kitchen. Combine beer and tacos into one with the Beer Battered Halibut tacos loaded with chipotle aioli, guacamole, pico de gallo, cabbage and cotija. Carnivores will love the Filet Mignon Strip Tacos with tender filet mignon strips grilled to perfection and topped with garlic aioli, guacamole, pico de gallo, cabbage and cotija.
