Pacific Beach's Sugar & Scribe Bakery To Open New Location in Former Zenbu Space in Jolla This Fall

September 4, 2014

Sugar & Scribe Executive Chef Maeve Rochford and her partner, local attorney and restaurateur Patrick Daniels, are expanding their award-winning, Irish bakery, taking over the former Zenbu space in La Jolla for an anticipated opening of this October 2014. In 2010, Maeve Rochford founded Sugar & Scribe Bakery in Pacific Beach to share the greatest recipes of the Emerald Isle. Sugar & Scribe Bakery and Fine Foods La Jolla will be a full-service bakery, fine foods emporium and gourmet-to-go all-in-one. The P.B. location will stay open but it will no longer serve food - desserts and orders only.

Maeve's vision for the new home of family-inspired recipes from the Emerald Isle was influenced by her grandmother Kate Ann, a cook in England for Sir Patrick Brown, a barrister for King George VI. The menu at the La Jolla location will feature breakfast, lunch and dinner classics with tasty twists and a mix of daily special salads and meals that are inspired by the season’s fresh produce.

"I want the ambiance of Sugar & Scribe Bakery and Fine Foods in La Jolla to be a place where I imagine a farmer enjoying his hearty lunch and a princess planning her dream wedding,” said Maeve.

A cake decorating station will be the major centerpiece of the layout and design so guests can watch the bakers work their magic in creating their sugar and buttercream masterpieces. A permanent resident of Sugar & Scribe Bakery and Fine Foods, Mr. Bug, Maeve’s dear old pug, will be welcoming his four-legged guests daily, as all dogs are welcome.

The open, airy layout is a blend of the very best of classic and contemporary European design in a warm and comfortable scene, and features communal seating to meet your neighbors for a cup of coffee or to just sit and be entertained by the master cake decorators.

Maeve and Patrick have worked with Dianne Harsch of Studio Emphasis for the 2,800 square foot space. Throughout her career, Harsch's focus has been to create spaces both modern and traditional that have a sense of timelessness. Harsch also designed Patrick's successful Little Italy restaurants, Bencotto Italian Kitchen and Monello.

Sugar & Scribe Bakery and Fine Foods will open this October at 7660 Fay Avenue in La Jolla. For more information, visit SugarandScribe.com or call (858) 274-1733.
