Broadway San Diego Announces Exciting Line Up For 40th Anniversary Season

January 22, 2016
Broadway San Diego hopes to celebrate its 40th Anniversary with one of their biggest and most chart-topping seasons, offering a lineup that is a blend of Broadway classics and critically acclaimed newcomers straight from New York, including The Lion King, Cabaret, The Sound of Music and more.

The 2016-2017 Season first welcomes audiences to the infamous Kit Kat Klub, where the Emcee, Sally Bowles and a raucous ensemble take the stage nightly to tantalize the crowd in Cabaret. The beloved story of Maria and the von Trapp family comes to life in the brand new production of The Sound of Music, directed by former Old Globe Theatre Artistic Director, Jack O’Brien. Next up is the winner of four 2014 Tony Awards, and the genre-bending, fourth-wall-smashing musical sensation, Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Based on the beloved novel by Roald Dahl, Matilda The Musical tells the story of an extraordinary girl who dares to change her destiny. Don’t miss out as the magical musical on Broadway comes to San Diego in Finding Neverland. And finally, the season closes out with The Bodyguard, starring Deborah Cox, based on the smash–hit film featuring Whitney Houston.

“I am thrilled with our 40th Anniversary Season which really does bring a variety of spectacular productions worth celebrating,” said Joe Kobryner, Vice President of Broadway/San Diego. “We have everything from the classics that have thrilled audiences for years, and are now re-imagined as well as some of the biggest titles coming straight from Broadway,” he said.

Added season events this year include Disney’s The Lion King, coming back to San Diego for the first time in 7 years, as well as the 20th anniversary of a show that transformed Broadway, RENT, and a San Diego-born and hometown favorite, Jersey Boys.
