Johan Engman started his San Diego breakfast empire nearly a decade ago with his first Fig Tree Cafe location in Pacific Beach. He has since opened two more Fig Tree Cafes (Hillcrest & Liberty Station) and two outposts of his Breakfast Republic concept (North Park & Liberty Station). We recently learned that Engman has another eatery in development - North Park Breakfast Company - set to debut at 3131 University Avenue as early as late 2016/early 2017.
Johan Engman knows that competition is a good thing in business, so he's competing with himself. He recently opened his second Breakfast Republic location not far from a thriving Fig Tree Cafe branch in Liberty Station. Now, he's moving into North Park a stone's throw from his original Breakfast Republic. North Park Breakfast Company will continue Engman's upscale breakfast business, offering reimagined classics and zany twists on morning favorites.
A native of Sweden, Engman moved to San Diego when he was 16 and worked at various positions within the restaurant industry. He fell in love with the industry and knew he eventually wanted to open his own breakfast-centric restaurant. In 2008, his dream came alive when he opened the first Fig Tree Cafe in Pacific Beach. The rest, as they say, is history.
The 2,000-plus square foot, two story space that will house North Park Breakfast Currently will receive an extensive renovation. When it opens, the eatery will serve upscale breakfast items, cocktails, wine and craft beer.
