Shake Shack To Open In La Jolla | Popular Burger Chain To Expand Into San Diego In 2017

November 8, 2016

Celebrity Chef Danny Meyer's "fine-casual" burger chain is opening an outpost in San Diego! The Shake Shack will touch down in La Jolla within Westfield UTC as part of the outdoor shopping destination's $500 million expansion, anticipated to open in mid to late 2017, and the company intends to open more locations in America's Finest City in the future.

Shake Shack is a critically acclaimed, modern day “roadside” burger eatery known for its 100% all-natural, antibiotic & hormone free Angus beef burgers, griddled-crisp flat-top dogs, cage-free chicken sandwiches, fresh-made frozen custard, crinkle cut fries, beer and wine, and more. A fun and lively community gathering place with widespread appeal, Shake Shack has earned a cult-like following around the world.

The Westfield UTC Shake Shack will be constructed with recycled and sustainable materials and located on Level 2 of a new, three-level retail building that is part of a huge, $540 million redevelopment taking place at the shopping complex in the next year. Chairs and booths in the 3,000 square foot indoor/outdoor eatery will be made from lumber certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, and tabletops will be made from reclaimed bowling alley lanes from Brooklyn’s Counter Evolution. In addition to the regular menu, there will also be frozen custard concretes (think a McFlurry) featuring mix-ins from local food purveyors. The company is also scouting other locations for additional San Diego hubs, including North County, downtown and Liberty Station.

Originally founded by Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group, which owns and operates some of New York City’s most celebrated restaurants including Union Square Cafe, Gramercy Tavern, The Modern at the Museum of Modern Art, Maialino, North End Grill, Blue Smoke, and Marta - Shake Shack started out as a food cart inside NYC's Madison Square Park in 2004 and has  since pioneered the creation of a new “fine casual” category in restaurants. Fine casual couples the ease, value and convenience of fast casual concepts with the high standards of excellence in thoughtful ingredient sourcing, preparation, hospitality and quality grounded in fine dining.

After more than a decade since Shake Shack was born in New York City’s Madison Square Park, it launched its first California location in West Hollywood, Los Angeles in 2016 and now has more than 85 locations around the globe. The group plans to open more outposts throughout Southern California in the future as part of its global expansion.
