Ocean Beach's Former-Ranchos Is Now Hugo's Cocina

February 25, 2017

Ocean Beach's Ranchos Cocina, an organic Mexican eatery which debuted in 1995, closed abruptly last November due to the owner falling ill, but three longtime OB-residents took over the space and reopened it this week as Hugo's Cocina.

After Ranchos was forced to close due to the illness of owner Marcos Mouet, Ocean Beach residents Hugo Carrillo, Patrick Clingaman, and Matt Cook, took over the space, redesigned the interior, and updated the menu to improve the longstanding restaurant while keeping it familiar to frequent diners. Hugo's maintains committed to Rancho's philosophy of offering healthy, organic alternatives, including vegan and vegetarian options, to traditional Mexican fare. Many of Ranchos former employees are now at Hugo's and the menu is very similar. Co-owner Clingaman also owns Thai Thime Bistro, which is located at the opposite end of the same plaza as Hugo's, and co-owner Cook is also the general manager of nearby Belching Beaver Brewery Tasting Room and has previously worked at Newport Pizza and Tiger!Tiger!.

Before Ranchos Ocean Beach closed for business, there was a sign on the door stating that the restaurant would be reopening in a new location due to a dispute with the landlord, but that plan has been halted. The North Park location of Ranchos Cocina remains open for business.

Hugo's is currently in the process of obtaining a beer and wine license, and once received, will offer a selection of Mexican beers, micheladas and wine. Hugo's Cocina is located at 1830 Sunset Cliffs Blvd., Suite H, in Ocean Beach and is open daily from 8am to 10pm.
