Santee's Gluten-Free Starry Lane Bakery Announces Migration To Hillcrest

February 26, 2017

Santee's popular Starry Lane Bakery, which opened in 2011, has announced that it will move its operations to a new location in San Diego's Hillcrest community, taking over the space that previously housed The FABB sushi restaurant at 3925 4th Avenue. The 100% gluten free bakery will expand its operations and continue to offer a menu of cupcakes, cookies, pastries, pies, artisan breads, custom cakes and more.

Due to a boom in business, Starry Lane Bakery needed to expand. Owned by sisters Jaime and Jennifer Schwartz, the family-run bakery initially intended to open a second location, but due to increased operation costs, decided to relocate. The new Hillcrest headquarters is far larger than the previous space and will include tables for sit-down dining, as well as a coffee and tea bar, a small kids corner, and books, activities, and board games. All Starry Lane Bakery products will continue to be made on-site in a dedicated facility that is free of gluten, soy, dairy, eggs, tree nuts, peanuts, as well as being vegan and free of all artificial food dyes.

Starry Lane Bakery will close its Santee location after close of business on March 30 and hopes to open in Hillcrest in May. The business posted the below announcement to its Facebook page on February 23:

Starry Lane Bakery is Moving To Hillcrest

Business has been growing so much over the past year that we've had trouble keeping up in our current location. We sent our kitchen elves out scouting, and they came back with an amazing space in the heart of Hillcrest.

We love our Santee community, it's been so welcoming and supportive, and it breaks our hearts to leave. Originally we had planned on keeping our current location and opening a second store in a more central location, unfortunately the rising cost of business has made that impossible. While we're incredibly sad to leave, we hope the numerous benefits that our friends and guest will reap from this decision will outweigh the disappointment of our move.

The Facts

The New Bakery is Huge
Seriously, this new location is 4x the size of our current bakery. What does that mean for you? So much! (keep reading)

We'll Have Seating
The Hillcrest location will have lots of seating available for anyone who wants to relax with a pastry and a good book (there's going to be a bookshelf full of books and games to entertain you while you chill)

WiFi
If a book isn't your thing, why not take advantage of our free WiFi?

Expanded Menu
One of the biggest complaints we've received from our guests lately has been the limited nature of our menu. We understand, truly. Unfortunately we've been limited by the size of our kitchen. Well not anymore! With our new larger bakery we'll be able to produce brand new items, as well as more of the pastries and cookies you already love.

More Bread
Love our pretzel rolls, but with you could get them on Tuesday? Now you can! All of our Artisan Breads will be available every day.

New Cupcake Flavors
In addition to introducing some brand new flavors of cupcake (like Banana Split, Campfire, and Strawberry Sensation), we'll have 9 flavors of cupcakes available daily!

Drinks
You spoke, and we listened. Fresh lemonade, iced tea, hot tea, coffee and hot chocolate will all be available for our guests to enjoy.

Ready To Go Cakes
Possibly one of the most exciting new things we're going to be able to do is to have fresh baked cakes on hand daily. Next time you have a cake related emergency with no time to place a special order, Starry Lane will be ready to save the day!

We're Still The Starry Lane You Love
Nothing about Starry Lane that you've come to depend on will change. We will still hold the same unwavering commitment to providing excellent top 10 allergen free pastries and baked goods in a dedicated environment. Absolutely no outside food or drink will be allowed in the bakery at any time. We're committed to creating a safe space for you and your family to relax and enjoy a pastry without any worry about possible contamination in either the food your enjoying, or the surfaces around you.

The Dates
Thursday, March 30th will be the last day our Santee location will be open. The new location in Hillcrest will open in the beginning of May. We don't have an exact date yet (we're unfortunately at the mercy of the city permitting department). As soon as we have a firm opening date we'll post it on Facebook, the website, and send out an email blast to everyone on our list.

The Place
The new location is 3925 4th Ave, San Diego CA, 92103. Located right between Washington and University, around the corner from the Hillcrest sign.

A Final Word
We'd like to thank all of our loyal customers and friends for making the past 5 years such an amazing experience. Without you we could have never made it to this momentous point. Your support and words of encouragement have meant the world to us. We truly believe that this move will turn out to be a positive experience for all of us, and we hope that you'll stick with us during the transition while we work to make Starry Lane Bakery bigger, better, and available to even more of the allergen community.
