Steamy Piggy Bringing Handmade Dumplings To San Diego's Kearny Mesa

April 4, 2017

The 2,200 square foot space that formerly housed Lemon House near the original Tajima on Convoy Street will soon become Steamy Piggy, a dumpling-focused Chinese restaurant and noodle house set to open in San Diego's Kearny Mesa neighborhood later this spring.

Owned by Franklin Chou, Steamy Piggy will be a modern Chinese restaurant that will offer traditional noodle dishes and a dumpling bar featuring a concise menu of scratch-made stuffed dumplings made with ethically sourced meat and local produce. Beef and pork used in the dumplings will come from pasture-raised animals, and the poultry will be free-range. Most vegetables will be sourced from local farmer's markets or reliable suppliers who "hold a similar high regard for the ingredients as we do."

"The idea and inspiration behind Steamy Piggy is to bring on a fresh and modern take on Chinese food," explained owner Frankin Chou. "With a rapidly growing number of Japanese restaurants and ramen houses around San Diego, Steamy Piggy is looking forward to bringing Chinese food along with a carefully designed interior from Embrio Design Studio."

Expect dumpling options like namesake The Steamy Piggy - a classic pork & chive with a twist, The "Limited" -  a chicken soup dumpling with ginger and fresh herbs, or The Vigor Veggie with kale, zucchini, mushroom and egg. Additional items will include noodle dishes like ZhaJiangMian, DanDanMian, and Soup Noodle, as well as a variety of starters like Spring Onion Pancake, Baos, Cumin Cauliflower, Pork Belly Wraps, Scallion Pancake Wraps, Orange Chicken, Spinach Dumpling Salad, and Sauteed Vegetables. Steamy Piggy will also serve a limited menu of beer and wine, as well as non-alcoholic beverages like green tea, black tea, oolong tea, herbal tea, fruit tea, blooming tea, milk tea and cold brew coffee.

"Our aim is to put the best tasting traditional Chinese dumplings and noodles at the forefront of people’s minds when they feel hungry," continued Chou. "We also hope to attract more San Diego diners to the Convoy area. We believe it is an up and coming area with a very extensive and wonderful variation of Asian restaurants, and we are proud to be in the middle of it."

Located at 4681 Convoy Street in San Diego's Kearny Mesa, Steamy Piggy is anticipated to open this spring. For more information, visit steamypiggy.com and check out the launch dumpling menu below.
