Amazon To Open Technologically Advanced Supermarket In San Diego's North County | Amazon Go Coming To Encinitas In 2018

November 10, 2017

A good sign that Amazon may bring its second headquarters to San Diego, the e-commerce behemoth announced that it will open the second location of its technologically advanced supermarket in Encinitas. Amazon Go will open at 687 S. Coast Highway 101 within the space that last housed Whole Foods in the Pacific Station retail and residential development in San Diego's North County.

Amazon Go is an ultra-modern marketplace with no checkout required, with the first location opened in Amazon's home city of Seattle, WA earlier this year. At Amazon Go, there are no checkout lines. Rather, customers experience the Just Walk Out Shopping experience with the use of the Amazon Go app to enter the store, take the products they want, and leave without the need to pay on the spot! The checkout-free shopping experience is made possible by similar technologies used in self-driving cars. Amazon's Just Walk Out Technology automatically detects when products are taken from or returned to the shelves and keeps track of them in a virtual cart. When customer's are done shopping, they can just leave the store, with their Amazon account charged shortly after departure.

Amazon Go will offer ready-to-eat breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack options made fresh every day by on-site chefs and favorite local kitchens and bakeries. The selection of grocery essentials ranges from staples like bread and milk to artisan cheeses and locally made chocolates. The store carries well-known brands, as well as specialty items. For a quick home-cooked dinner, Amazon Go also offers chef-designed Amazon Meal Kits, with all the ingredients you need to make a meal for two in about 30 minutes.

Last month, the city submitted a proposal to Amazon applying for San Diego to be the location for Amazon's HQ2, a second headquarters location for the Seattle-based e-commerce company. Over 200 other city's submitted applications.

Amazon Go is anticipated to open in Encinitas in mid-to-late 2018. For more information, check out the video below.
