Pop Pie Co. To Takeover Nati's Mexican Space In Ocean Beach For Second Location

January 25, 2018

After originally reporting that new owners of the building at 1852 Bacon Street in Ocean Beach had no intention of ousting longtime tenant Nati's Mexican Food, we have learned that the Nati's space is destined to become part of the second location of Pop Pie Co., which be a 3,600 square foot full-scale bar & restaurant, as well as an in-house ice creamery and coffee shop when it opens in 2019.

The first location of Pop Pie Co. premiered at 4404 Park Boulevard in University Heights in late September 2016. Owners Steven Torres and Chef Gan Suebsarakham immediately packed the house with their ever-changing assortment of globally-inspired savory and sweet single serving pies for dine-in or take-out. The restaurant also frequently does pie collaborations with other local food purveyors and offers a selection of fresh-made sides & salads, rotating craft brews, a curated wine list, and a coffee bar with caffeinated concoctions using a variety of beans, including special roasts from Heart Roasters of Portland, OR.

Late last year, Michael Donovan of SDPB Holdings Inc. & SQFT Investments LLC purchased the building that houses Nati's, The Current Collective, and the Nest Coffee & Tea. After nearly 60 years in operation, Nati's Mexican Food will close for business in around 4-5 weeks to a couple months. Although details are still being finalized and Pop Pie Co. ownership is keeping information under wraps until all documents are signed, we believe that the building will undergo an extensive remodel, possibly to add additional residential and commercial units, and the new Pop Pie Co. will not open before Fall 2018.

The new Pop Pie Co. will be a larger scale operation than the original, fast-casual eatery, taking advantage of the bigger space and its expansive outdoor dining area. In addition to a selection of 5" savory pies and 3" sweet pies made with a flaky all-butter crust, the new restaurant will offer an expanded menu with more shareable plates, an housemade ice cream component, a full bar,  and the addition of a variety of world-fusion entrees. The restaurant will also have pre-selected suggested pairings for savory pie & beer and sweet pie & a full coffee bar. Pop Pie Co. ownership hopes to keep many of Nati's former employees when it opens on the corner of Bacon Street & Niagra Avenue in 2019.
