East Village Food Marketplace Bottega Americano Ends Its Run After 3 Years

February 6, 2018

A typed sign hanging on the door was all the notice that many received about today's closure of Bottega Americano, an ambitious Italian-inspired restaurant and specialty food marketplace that opened in San Diego's East Village in Summer 2014.

The first venture from four notable partners in San Diego’s dining scene, Bottega Americano was the brainchild of owners Giuseppe Ciuffa, founder and CEO of Giuseppe Fine Restaurants & Fine Catering; avid foodie, investor and East Village resident Chad Ruyle; restaurateur Greg Van de Velde, who most recently managed the iconic Bertrand at Mister A’s restaurant; and noted chef David Warner formerly of San Diego’s beachfront hotspot JRDN (who returned to JRDN's employ last year). The restaurant and market launched at the base of the Thomas Jefferson School of Law building in August 2014. The 8,000-square-foot dining hub has reportedly been on the market for some time due to difficulties with the location. There is no word yet on who will be moving into the unit.
