The owners of the super popular Encinitas scoop shop Handel's Homemade Ice Cream are bringing a new concept into downtown San Diego. Opening on Market Street in the Gaslamp is Cali Cream Homemade Ice Cream, a scratch-made ice cream parlour that will offer up to fifty rotating flavors every day!
Encinitas residents Ken Schulenburg and his girlfriend Juliana Ortiz opened an outpost of national chain Handel's Homemade Ice Cream in their hometown in June 2016. Growing up in Ohio where Handel's has been headquartered for more than 70 years, Schulenburg was very familiar with the growing national company. One of the only scoop shops in San Diego that makes all of its own products in the store, Handel's quickly had patrons lining up to get a taste of the more than fifty varying ice cream flavors available every day, with more than 300 flavor varieties in total.
Now Schulenburg and Ortiz are ready to start an ice cream parlour concept of their own. The duo has secured the 1,600 square-foot storefront at 425 Market Street in San Diego's Gaslamp and will build Cali Cream Homemade Ice Cream, utilyzing their ice cream creation skills to bring eclectic flavors to the downtown area. Expect replication of Handel's favorites like Oree Dough (chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream with large chunks of Oreo cookies) and Graham Central Station (graham cracker-flavored ice cream with graham ripple and chocolate covered honeycomb crunch), as well as an ever-changing array of new flavors like Red Sky Tonight (black raspberry ice cream with chocolate truffle chunks). In addition to cones and cups, Cali Cream will sell its ice cream by the pint and quart, as well as ice cream sundaes, banana splits, ice cream cake pops, and ice cream cakes and pies.
