After Almost Three Decades, Longtime San Diego Sushi Mecca Cafe Japengo To Shutter In La Jolla

June 5, 2018

A popular Golden Triangle sushi destination for 28 years, Cafe Japengo has announced that it will close for business later this month.

Hyatt Regency La Jolla opened in 1990 and there were four restaurants in the hotel complex known as Aventine. Of them, only Cafe Japengo still exists, that is, until end of service on June 22 when the restaurant will permanently close to make way for a national fitness chain. With a kitchen helmed by Executive Chef Jay Payne and a sushi bar led by longtime Executive Sushi Chef Jerry Warner, Cafe Japengo's kitchen has been a rotating door for amazing San Diego chefs, including Harvest By The Patio's former Executive Chef Amiko Gubbins, James Montejano of Carlsbad Seaside Market, Davin Waite of Wrench & Rodent Seabasstropub, Anthony Pascale of Saiko Sushi and many others.

Those looking for a last Tootsie Roll should get into Cafe Japengo before it closes after normal hours on Friday, June 22. Cafe Japengo is located at 8960 University Center Lane in La Jolla' Aventine complex. For more information, visit cafejapengo.com.
