StreetCar Merchants Owner Takes Over Long Dormant Former RA Sushi Space In Downtown San Diego For New Concept

October 31, 2019

The team behind North Park's StreetCar Merchants Of Fried Chicken, Suckerfree Southern Plates & Bar in San Diego's Gaslamp, and incoming ShotCaller fast casual eatery has taken over the long dormant downtown space last occupied by RA Sushi for an entirely new concept.

Founded by Ron Suel and RaVae Smith, Streetcar launched in North Park in 2014 and opened a La Jolla location in December 2016 that closed in less than a year. In early 2018, Suel and Smith launched Suckerfree Southern Plates & Bar in the Gaslamp Quarter. This past September, the duo took over the quaint space previously occupied by Wingmii in the Lincoln Park area of San Diego for the opening of a new fast-casual Southern comfort food restaurant called Shotcaller.

Suel and Smith have secured a lease on the 5,000+ square foot space at 474 Broadway on the ground floor of the Viridian Lofts Apartments in downtown San Diego that has been dormant for more than 3 years since the 2016 closure of RA Sushi. The new concept will be "nothing similar to what we have done but I’m not at liberty to say what it is at the moment," explained Suel. The yet-to-be-named project is not expected to open until late 2020.
