$30 Million Portuguese-Themed Hotel & All Day Restaurant Coming To Point Loma's Bayfront

October 26, 2019

The first of Hilton's modern Tapestry Collection of properties to come to San Diego, The Monsaraz is opening in Point Loma next summer replacing the longstanding Dolphin Motel. The new hotel will come at an estimated cost of $30 million and boast a Portuguese-inspired design with marina views and a full-service bar and restaurant.

After demolishing the decades-old Dolphin Motel earlier this year, San Diego-based RAR Hospitality has begun building The Monsaraz in partnership with Hilton and local development firm Alliance Development. RAR Hospitality, which also oversees The Lafayette in North Park and other area properties, will own and operate The Monsaraz. Once complete, the nearly 50,000 square-foot property will have 92-rooms, views of the marina and Downtown San Diego, as well as a contemporary lobby, fitness center, outdoor garden and deck, an 800-square-foot meeting room, 4,000 square feet of outdoor event space, and an expansive courtyard that will feature a bar with an illuminated tree in the center. The property will have a Portuguese theme, paying tribute to the Portuguese settlers that landed on Point Loma in the 1500s. Los Angeles-based KNA Design will be leading the interior design plan for The Monsaraz. Design features include a large fireplace embedded in a rendering of a lion’s head, a turf area with lawn games and a play area for kids, and an outdoor lounge with a firepit featuring a 30-foot-tall mural as a backdrop. The hotel is expected to have nightly rates of around $200.

The Monsaraz's yet-to-be named restaurant will be open to the public, offering seating for 65 diners for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Expect a Portuguese influence with decorative Azulejo tiles from Portugal featured in the design. There will also be a "hidden" rooftop lounge and deck.

The Monsarez is expected to open at 2912 Garrison Street in San Diego's Point Loma community in summer 2020. For more information, visit hilton.com/en/tapestry.
