Donut Bar Shutters In San Diego's South County With New Location Set To Open Next Week In Pacific Beach

November 4, 2019

After only 5 months in business, San Diego's born Donut Bar has shuttered its location in the South County community of Eastlake, marking the second shop closure for the brand in the past month. A new branch will open in the heart of Pacific Beach next week.

Donut Bar, which currently has stores open in downtown San Diego, Las Vegas, and Temecula, is in the process of a franchising expansion that will result in more than a dozen locations, including at least four new area outposts. Founded by former professional pastry chef Santiago Campa and his partner Wendy Bartels, Donut Bar first opened on B Street in downtown San Diego in 2013. In mid-2016, the company announced that it would be embarking on a franchising expansion effort. That same year, Donut Bar also began opening on weekend evenings and offering craft beer pairings to go along with donuts.

As a sign of possible trouble for the ambitious brand, the Donut Bar location in Orange County closed in a short period, and last month, the Scottsdale branch shuttered. There is no word on why the Eastlake location closed, but a sign posted on the eatery's wall implies the franchisee may have had issues with its parent company. A new Pacific Beach branch of Donut Bar will grand open on Sunday, November 10, and there are also outposts in the works for downtown Riverside, CA and Tucson, AZ.
