Italian Street Tacos Now Available In San Diego

November 5, 2019

In addition to recently releasing their pinsa pizza dough for retail sale at area Sprout's Farmers Markets, the team behind San Diego's Maestoso restaurant has unveiled an onsite pop-up known as ÍTaco, which is serving Italian-inspired tacos with plans to expand to its own brick-and-mortar location.

In March 2018, Italian chef Marco Maestoso and his longtime partner Dalila Ercolani opened Maestoso restaurant within The Hub Hillcrest Market. While the eatery originally offered rotating selections from dim-sum-like carts, the restaurant has since altered its approach to center its menu around fresh made pasta, pinsa (Roman crunchy pizza), rotating entrees, and a chefs' tasting menu with 4, 10 and 20 course options. Last month, Maestoso began selling its pinsa dough in area Sprout's locations.

Maestoso's latest endeavor is ÍTaco, a concept aiming to take the best from Marco's home country and combine it with San Diego's favorite comfort food. Expect a variety of unique taco options like lamb ossobuco, eggplant parmigiana, shrimp Caesar, porchetta, and drunken octopus - ranging in price from $3-5. As Maestoso searches for the right locations to open several brick and mortar branches of the concept, ÍTaco will operate as a pop-up in the outdoor area of Maestoso restaurant facing the Hub Mall lot from 12-6pm every day but Tuesday.

"About a month ago, I helped a colleague with taco catering a basketball tournament and I ended up making tacos using Italian flavors and ingredients," explained Chef Marco. "Many people were shocked at the twists on this all time favorite Mexican item, so much so that some wrote me asking where the location was, so I started a pop-up at the restaurant until I can find a location."

Before opening his namesake restaurant, Marco and his partner Dalila hosted a series of sold out pop-up dinners served in their small apartment in New York City. In 2015, Maestoso opened his first restaurant Casa Maestoso, which spent more than five months in the number one spot on Trip Advisor’s list of the more than ten-thousand restaurants in Rome.

Maestosos is located at 1040 University Avenue, Suite B101, within The Hub in Hillcrest. For more information, visit maestoso.com.
