Three San Diego eateries made this year's incarnation of Yelp’s Top 100 Places to Eat list, including a local food truck that made the #1 spot.
For the 7th year in a row, Yelp, has released its list of the top 100 places to eat in the United States. Each year, Yelp tinkers with its "algorithms" for coming up with its annual "best of" honoration. For 2020, the online, crowd-sourced reviews aggregator pulled the top restaurants by ratings and number of reviews in 2019 across the U.S., with representation based on each place’s share of top-rated restaurants nationally, then curated the list with the expertise of their Community Managers around the country to finalize the rankings.
The San Diego spots named to Yelp’s Top 100 Places to Eat in the U.S. 2020 list are Shawarma Guys food truck in South Park (#1), Soichi Sushi in University Heights (#9) and Mr Bibi Korean Asian Fusion in Oceanside. In 2019, six local restaurant's made Yelp's list, including Crafted Greens in El Cajon (#17), Chuy’s Taco Shop in Rolando (#29), Tahini in Kearny Mesa (#69), Bud & Rob’s New Orleans Bistro in East Village (#72) Pho Guys in Vista (#75), and Empanada Kitchen in Downtown San Diego (#94).
Shawarma Guys is a popular San Diego food truck that parks in an empty lot at 3012 Grape Street in South Park and was even crowned the best food truck in California earlier this year. The eatery opened in January 2019 and boasts a 5 star-rating with nearly 500 reviews. Soichi Sushi opened last year in the University Heights space that had been home to Circa California Soul Food since 2014. The traditional Japanese restaurant currently has 125 reviews and a perfect 5-stars. Mr. Bibi also opened last year and has a 5-star rating with more than 100 reviews. The Korean fusion eatery is located in downtown Oceanside, a stone throw from the iconic pier.
