Tijuana's Popular Tacos El Gallo To Open San Diego Location

February 20, 2020

A popular destination for authentic street tacos in Tijuana for more than three decades, Tacos El Gallo will soon open its first U.S. location in San Diego.

Since 1989, Tacos El Gallo has been a destination for delicious Mexican Street food in the border-adjacent Otay district of Tijuana. The eatery is known for using thick New York steak cuts rather than the thin slices of cheaper meat usually used for tacos. In 2008, ownership launched sister concept Tacos El Gallito just steps down the street and they also operate El Rooster Tijuana Food Joint, which serves a menu based around fried chicken.

The U.S. location of Tacos El Gallo will open by March within the 1,232 square-foot space that last housed El Charrito in San Diego's El Cajon area. The eatery will be operated by Israel Mejia. In addition to steak tacos, Tacos El Gallo will also offer a menu of tacos and burritos made with handmade flour tortillas with options like birria, chicken, Chile relleno, and adobada marinated pork cut from a rotating trompo, as well as smothered fries.

Tacos El Gallo will sit at 569 N 2nd Street in San Diego's El Cajon area.
