Del Mar Racing Indicates Summer Season Will Proceed Even Without Onsite Spectators

April 19, 2020

Del Mar Racing & Thoroughbred Club has stated they plan on hosting their 2020 summer horse racing season this July with or without fans in attendance.

"At this time, we look forward to hosting our summer meet with or without fans as determined by state guidelines," said a representative of Del Mar Racing. "In the coming weeks, we will continue to evaluate and readjust as necessary. The horses that train on site during the summer will still need a place to go and to train and we are doing everything within our power to provide them a safe place to do so."

The 2020 Del Mar horse racing season is set to begin on Saturday, July 18 and run thought September 7. Recently, California Governor Gavin Newsom speculated that due to continued COVID-19 coronavirus concerns, mass gatherings would not be permitted to take place through this summer. This resulted in several highly anticipated San Diego event organizers cancelling this year's planned incarnations, including the San Diego County Fair, San Diego Pride, and Comic-Con International San Diego. Many speculated Del Mar Racing would follow suit, but it seems they are devoted to working on a way to proceed even without having fans in attendance.
