Pop-up Boat-In Movie Theater Coming To San Diego

Beyond Cinema has announced that they will bring their floating cinema pop-up experience to San Diego this fall.

With drive-in movie theaters expected to experiencing a resurgence in the wake of the continued coronavirus pandemic, Australian entertainment and event company, Beyond Cinema, is taking socially distanced film viewing to a whole new level. The company has announced its boat-in "Floating Cinema" will will visit 16 select U.S. cities throughout September and October 2020. Beyond Cinema has already hosted the experience in Sydney, Australia, in 2018 and 2019.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Beyond Cinema is forced to adjust its screening capacity to from between 12 to 24 mini boats, which can each hold up to eight people. Customers will be required to purchase an entire mini boat to ensure proper social distancing for household members and close friends. Beyond Cinema’s movie lineup and pricing have not been released but the website states there will be a "mix of golden oldies and new releases". There will be free popcorn offered for everyone attending, and other movie snacks and drinks will be available to purchase. Beyond Cinema's events usually include a theme. Past parties have included "The Great Gatsby," "Mad Hatters Tea Party," "Shawshank Redemption", and "The Titanic."

There is no location yet announced for the San Diego visit, but speculations for possible sites include Coronado, Mission Bay, and even the new Portside Pier in downtown San Diego. Beyond Cinema will also be doing pop-up visits in Los Angeles, Denver, San Francisco, St. Louis, Houston, Chicago, Miami, Orlando, New York, Pittsburgh, Austin, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Columbus and Cincinnati, as well as Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary.
