San Diego Birria Specialists To Open South County Taco Shop

January 23, 2021

The family behind South County's 15-year-old birria destination Fernandez Restaurant is opening a new taco shop. Tacos Fernandez will open soon in San Diego's South Bay.

After testing the water with a food truck, brothers Miguel Angel and Jorge Fernandez founded Tijuana-style birria eatery Ed Fernandez Restaurant in 2006 in the Nestor community of South San Diego. The restaurant has since doubled in size and always has hungry patrons lining up for up to 2 hours each morning  to get a taste of the authentic birria de res, a chile-based stewed meat made with beef (traditionally goat) that is slow-simmered overnight.

Miguel Fernandez has branched off and along with his business partner Oscar Armenta have teamed up to take over a space a stone's throw from Fernandez Restaurant to open Tacos Fernandez, a "Chipotle-style" fast-casual eatery that will serve a menu of tacos, burritos, Mexican bowls, tortas and tostadas. The restaurant will be open for lunch & dinner and also serve a variety of Mexican soft drinks.

Tacos Fernandez is expected to open by this spring at 1290 Hollister Street in the Otay Nestor neighborhood of San Diego's South Bay.
