Acclaimed Mexican Chef To Open Restaurant In San Diego Inspired By Baja's Famed Valle De Guadalupe Wine Destination

March 1, 2021

A highly-acclaimed chef from Baja Mexico's famed Valle de Guadalupe wine region is opening a new restaurant in San Diego's North County.

Roberto Alcocer has been the executive chef at Malva restaurant in Valle de Guadalupe since the open air eatery debuted on Mina Penélope winery in 2014. Prior to joining Malva, the Ensendada native with Oaxacan roots worked in some of the top kitchens around the globe, including The World's 50 Best Restaurants honorees Pujol in Mexico City and La Broche in Spain.

Alcocer has recently relocated his family to Oceanside and joined the team at the incoming Mission Pacific Hotel by Hyatt, which is set to open this spring. In addition to offering a more casual Baja street food-inspired menu at the property's rooftop pool eatery, Chef Alcocer will open his own eatery on the property currently dubbed Valle Restaurant: A Guadalupe Valley Kitchen. Centered around open-flame and charcoal cooking, the eatery will have sweeping views of the Oceanside Pier with a seaside dining veranda and center its menu on using California-fresh ingredients to recreate some of the Alcocer's most popular dishes from Malva. Expect items like slow-roasted lamb, fresh and grilled oysters, yellowtail crudo, grilled octopus, and much more. There will also be a full bar featuring agave-based cocktails and beer & wine from Baja.

"The idea of the restaurant is to showcase the original philosophy of Valle de Guadalupe where the local ingredients are the artists," explained Chef Robert Alcocer. "The cooking techniques will be highlighted by the Vesuvio charcoal oven to bring that wood-fire essence to the food, and the best wines from Baja will be poured."

The new Mission Pacific Hotel is expected to open by this June and will offer guests a laid-back, yet upscale experience. As part of Hyatt’s Joie de Vivre boutique hotel brand, the hotel will feature 161 guestrooms and suites, more than 3,000 square-feet of curated retail, and three food and beverage experiences, including the only rooftop pool bar in northern San Diego County. The hotel will also open the doors to the "Top Gun" house, the iconic 1887 house featured in the popular 1980s film following an extensive restoration project. Located across the street from Mission Pacific Hotel and connected underground on the resort property, the sister-hotel Seabird Resort will feature 226 guest rooms and suites, a full-service spa, fitness center, a 9,000 square foot pool deck on the ocean, and more than 20,000 square feet of meeting spaces with panoramic sea views. The Seabird will also house a California cuisine eatery and an ocean view lobby bar & lounge.
