Mic Drop Comedy Club To Replace The Comedy Palace In San Diego's Kearny Mesa

April 21, 2021

San Diego's The Comedy Palace and sister restaurant Greek Palace shuttered late last year after a three decade tenure, but laughs will return to the Kearny Mesa space when Mic Drop Comedy opens later this year.

Hillary Hutson and Casey Currier are bringing decades of comedy experience to San Diego with the opening of Mic Drop Comedy. Hutson has been surrounded by comedy since 2014, with a resume including serving as the executive director for events like the Big Pine Comedy Festival and San Diego Comedy Festival. She is also an investor and creative director for Laughs Unlimited Comedy Club and Lounge  in Sacramento, CA and has worked as the booker for House of Comedy in Phoenix, AZ. Currier has been in the comedy business since 2005, first starting as a door guy then rising to the ranks of a general manager for clubs such as Tempe Improv (Tempe, AZ), Stand Up Live (Phoenix, AZ), Palm Beach Improv (West Palm Beach, FL), and CB Live (Phoenix).

"Mic Drop Comedy will combine our passion for laughter with our love for the arts," explained co-founder Casey Currier. "The venue will showcase many locally sourced artistic elements including murals, unique decor, and many features not normally found in your traditional comedy club. The main showroom will deliver comedy from some of your favorite nationally touring headliners as well as some new favorites you should be adding to your list! Our inspiration stems from the idea of preserving comedy and live entertainment in San Diego. It is extremely important to us to continue the tradition of stand-up comedy in a space that it has been practiced for 30 years by The Comedy Palace. Mic Drop Comedy will honor the original owners by preserving the smaller 'Gold Room' showroom which will serve to foster and develop upcoming and local performers."

Mic Drop Comedy will offer a modern comedy club experience with a full bar featuring elevated cocktails, a curated wine list and San Diego craft beer. The space will feature an extended outdoor patio for guests to grab pre or post show drink, as well as a food menu with shareable appetizers, tacos, burritos, sandwiches, and side dishes. Day to day operations will be overseen by General Manager Shannon Roberts, who has worked in the comedy industry for the past 6 years, beginning her career at the Dead Crow Comedy Room in Wilmington, NC and previously acting as GM and booker for House of Comedy in Phoenix, AZ.

"We are bringing a new-school twist to every lesson we have learned to improve the overall guest experience," continued Currier  "We promise to provide a truly unique ambiance for our guests from the moment you step foot in the building. Throw the old notion of a comedy club out the window as we bring a fresh perspective with a focus on customer service. We hope you will come laugh with us at Mic Drop!"

Mic Drop Comedy aims to open by year's end at 8878 Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, Suite A, in San Diego's Kearny Mesa neighborhood.
