Longtime Mangia Italiano On Third Space To Become Rum-Fueled Tiki Bar & Restaurant

July 7, 2021

The founder of San Diego's Groundwell Brewing has taken over the Chula Vista space long occupied by Mangia Italiano on Third and will open a rum-fueled tiki bar and Island-themed restaurant.

Kevin Rhodes founded Groundswell Brewing Company in San Diego's Grantville in November 2013, and has since opened a 12,000 square-foot brewing facility in Santee and a tasting room on Third Avenue in the heart of Chula Vista. Rhodes recently took over the 5,060 square-foot building a stone's throw from his tasting room at 248 3rd Avenue that housed Mangia Italiano on Third for 14 years and is building a new bar & restaurant concept independent of his brewery.

The yet-to-be-named bar and restaurant concept will have a tiki and Island theme with a menu of tropical-inspired dishes and a bar centered around rum cocktails. There is also word of a possible speakeasy component. We reached out to Rhodes for comment and more information, but he declined to provide more details at this time.
