Longtime Mangia Italiano On Third Space To Become Rum-Fueled Tiki Bar & Restaurant

July 7, 2021

The founder of San Diego's Groundwell Brewing has taken over the Chula Vista space long occupied by Mangia Italiano on Third and will open a rum-fueled tiki bar and Island-themed restaurant called Lime In The Coconut.

Kevin Rhodes founded Groundswell Brewing Company in San Diego's Grantville in November 2013, and has since opened a 12,000 square-foot brewing facility in Santee and a tasting room on Third Avenue in the heart of Chula Vista. Rhodes recently took over the 5,060 square-foot building a stone's throw from his tasting room in the space that housed Mangia Italiano on Third for 14 years and is building a new bar & restaurant concept independent of his brewery.

Dubbed Lime In The Coconut, the incoming bar and restaurant concept will have a tiki and Island theme with a menu of tropical-inspired dishes and a bar centered around rum cocktails. There is also word of a possible speakeasy component, which is set to be named "X". We reached out to Rhodes for comment and more information, but he declined to provide more details at this time.

Lime In The Coconut is expected to open in spring 2022 at 248 3rd Avenue in San Diego's South County city of Chula Vista. For more information, follow the concept on Instagram
