Queenstown Public House To Open New Location At Former Karl Strauss Brewing Space In Heart Of San Diego's La Jolla

August 16, 2021

New Zealand-inspired Queenstown Public House is opening a new location in the heart of La Jolla Village, taking over the space that housed Karl Strauss Brewing Company for nearly 25 years.

In 2006, Phillip "PJ" Lamont and Matt Baker opened their first restaurant the Bare Back Bar & Grill in Pacific Beach, offering a menu of organic beef burgers, chicken sandwiches, and other New Zealand-inspired bites and dishes. They replicated the Bare Back Grill in the San Diego Gaslamp Quarter a few years later, but ultimately shuttered that location. They have since opened popular Little Italy eatery Queenstown Public House, Queenstown Bistro at Westfield UTC Mall, Ocean Beach's Raglan Public House, and Dunedin in North Park. Public documents show that a new Queenstown location is in the works for the expansive space on the corner of Wall Street and Herschel in La Jolla Village that was occupied by Karl Strauss Brewing Company from 1996 until the restaurant closed this past January.

The new Queenstown is expected to offer an eclectic brunch, lunch and dinner menu featuring shareable small plates, soups, salads, sandwiches and Kiwi favorites like meat pies, lamb, grilled shrimp and New Zealand's creative Fergburger-style burgers made with organic grass-fed beef, chicken and other exotic meats. Guests will also be able find a selection wine and craft beer from New Zealand and from all all over the globe, as well as craft cocktails, house-made sangria and more. There is currently no timeline on when the new Queenstown will open. Like the other New Zealand restaurants, expect a decor that pays homage to New Zealand’s natural landscape with tropical foliage and natural wood accents.

The new Queenstown bar & restaurant will sit at 1044 Wall Street, Suites C & D, in La Jolla. For more information, visit queenstownpublichouse.com.
