San Diego's Wonderfront Music & Arts Festival Announces Postponement Until 2022

August 26, 2021

San Diego's Wonderfront Music & Arts Festival was just about to announce its lineup for a November 2021 return, but due to rising COVID-19 cases, organizers have decided to postpone the event until 2022.

After a most successful inaugural 2019 Wonderfront Music & Arts Festival, the organizers began designing an even better 2020 event on the San Diego Bay waterfront. Then, when the Covid pandemic hit in 2020, California’s Public Health Order prohibited large events and gatherings, forcing the cancelation of the 2020 Festival. Immediately the Wonderfront team went to work on developing an amazing and safe experience for the 2021 Festival. The lineup booked is star-studded and sure to be a fast sell-out with many popular artists. Extra safety protocol plans were being put in place, and the announcement was just about to go out to the world when the Delta variant caused a skyrocketing surge of new Covid cases and hospitalizations in California and nationwide. After weeks of discussions and research with county, state and national health agencies, and the predicted case numbers leading into the fall, the Port of San Diego determined it was best to postpone a mega-event of this size.

"The continued safety of the community had to be front and center in our decision making," explained Michael G. Brown, Port of San Diego’s vice president of marketing and communications. "We pushed as long as we could working with the Wonderfront Festival team to see if case trends might look more positive or new information would give us the comfort level needed to move forward. But at the end of the day, the situation has not improved. Knowing that people book advance travel to attend, and production crews have months of logistical planning to do, a final decision needed to be made."

The new anticipated dates for Wonderfront Festival 2022 are November 18-20, 2022. The Wonderfront team remains committed to bringing San Diego great entertainment experiences. As soon as live events reopen in a safe manner in San Diego, they plan on organizing some fun Road to Wonderfront 2022 events hosted around San Diego.

"This announcement, though challenging, is met with understanding and appreciation for the Port of San Diego for providing us with such a spectacular venue for our festival," said Paul Thornton, Managing Partner of Wonderlust Events, LLC. "We love our lineup, including major headliners who confirmed this year, and the Wonderfront team has been tirelessly working on the festival’s second year. We have some new fan experiences we were so excited to roll out. Our team completely understands the Port of San Diego’s decision, as the safety of the Wonderfront community must come first. Once again, we will pivot and work with our artists to push this lineup to our new 2022 dates. We’re hoping to finalize the new dates so we can announce them and put tickets on-sale this Fall. We are looking forward to building an even better experience and celebrating the world getting back together at Wonderfront 2022."

The inaugural Wonderfront Festival took place in November 2019 with more than 125 artists playing across 10 stages as part of a three-day music, culinary and arts festival, which descended upon the stunning waterfront of San Diego Bay from Broadway Pier to the Embarcadero parks. With more than 57,000 people in attendance, the weekend festival offered many diverse attractions including yacht parties, water sports, art installations, after parties, a craft beer village, and plenty of local flavors. Wonderfront Festival’s re-entry policy encouraged festival goers to customize their weekend experience and truly integrate the city into the fabric of the festival.

More information will be released in the upcoming weeks as it relates to the announcement and on-sale of tickets for the 2022 Festival, as well as some Road to Wonderfront events. For more information about the Wonderfront Music & Arts Festival, visit wonderfrontfestival.com.
