The Jolly Joker Tavern Replaces Elbow Room In San Diego's Kearny Mesa

August 12, 2021

Taking over the space in San Diego's Kearny Mesa occupied by Elbow Room for nearly a decade is The Jolly Joker, a jester-themed neighborhood tavern from experienced California restaurant owners.

The Jolly Joker Tavern is the product of Amber Miller and Michael Brewer, who also operate The Sire Bar & Grill in Riverside, The Barn on the University of California Riverside campus, and Runway Spirits in Alameda, CA. The duo has long wanted to open a tavern in San Diego so when the Elbow Room closed up shop earlier this year, they took over the 5,000 square-foot unit and since have completely renovated it.

Expected to open later this month as soon as all inspections are complete, The Jolly Joker Tavern will have a design inspired by the Joker playing cards. Jesters, jokers and fools will be seen throughout the interior with highlights including a selfie area with king and queen thrones, a Shakespeare wall, and an old-school joker pinball machine. There will also be plenty of TVs for sports, a pool table, and frequent live entertainment on a dedicated stage. The restaurant's gastropub menu is currently being finalized by Chef Jeffrey Ford and will include tavern fare like fish & chips, salads, burgers, sandwiches and more. There will also be a full bar with spirits, cocktails, wine and beer.

The Jolly Joker is anticipated to unveil by month's end at 5225 Kearny Villa Road in San Diego's Kearny Mesa neighborhood.
