What Disrespect! San Diego Ranked Only #5 Best Taco City In California?! But By Whom?

October 7, 2021

Some San Diegans are up in arms over a recent ranking that put America's Finest City in the paltry #5 position on a list of best California cities for tacos.

"We looked for cities with wide access to taquerias, top Michelin honors, high consumer ratings, and taco festivals," reads the article 2021’s Best California Cities for Tacos on LawnStarter's blog. "We even considered Google search volumes for 'tacos' to gauge local taco love."

Austin, TX-based on-demand lawn care and maintenance startup LawnStarter published its rankings of top California cities for tacos in honor of National Taco Day, which took place on Monday, October 4. The top ten cities listed were: 1) Santa Barbara; 2) Santa Monica; 3) Costa Mesa; 4) Newport Beach; 5) San Diego; 6) Inglewood; 7) Sacramento; 8) Orange; 9) Berkeley; and 10) Escondido. Other cities in San Diego County that made the top 100 list were Chula Vista (15), Carlsbad (20), Oceanside (24), El Cajon (44), San Marcos (46) and Vista (77). The author of the article was listed only as "Staff Writer", and little information was presented on their criteria for determining the rankings.

Started in 2014, LawnStarter uses its website and mobile app to match consumers with lawn or outdoor service providers, and like Uber and other 3rd party "middleman" service apps, makes a percentage off every service that is booked on its platform. LawnStarter operates in more than 60 cities in the United States, including Austin, Nashville, and San Diego. The company was founded in Virginia by CEO Steve Corcoran and Ryan Farley (who had previously had a lawn operation together while in high school).

So it's a landscaping app company based out of Texas behind the rankings that put San Diego as only #5 best tacos in all of California. Of course, we all know better. With taco spots like Lola 55, Tuetano Taqueria, Tacos El Gordo, Oscar's Mexican Seafood, and Tacos El Cabron, to name a few, San Diego is possibly the top taco city in all of the United States.
