San Diego's Verant Group of bars & restaurants (Barleymash, Maverick's Beach Club) is planning a new location of its morning-focused Spill The Beans Coffee & Bagels concept to open in Pacific Beach.
The Verant Group opened the first Spill The Beans coffee house in summer 2017 as an adjacent cafe to compliment its The Smoking Gun bar and restaurant in downtown San Diego. A second location opened in the Lighthouse District of Seaport Village in late 2020. The cafe concept offers a menu centered around freshly made "California-style" bagels in non-traditional flavors and playful coffee creations from San Diego's Dark Horse Coffee Roasters.
The third branch of Spill The Beans will open in the 1,212 square-foot space that previously housed Mama Mia's Italian restaurant on Balboa Avenue in Pacific Beach. In addition to a creative variety of housemade bagels & cream cheeses, the eatery will also offer, coffee & tea drinks, taro lattes, kombucha & other soft drinks, chia bowls, pastries, infused compound butters and a menu of breakfast sandwiches.
Last year, Verant Group founder Joe Vaught purchased the 3,854 square-foot building that houses several condos and was previously occupied by The Patio on Lamont restaurant for approximately $3million. The Patio was forced to shutter in late September 2019 following an SEC complaint alleging $300 million fraud against the company's founder Gina Champion-Cain, who was ultimately sentenced to 15 years in prison. Vaught is partnering with Tony Damato to open a second location of Bay Park's Luce Bar & Kitchen in the expansive East Pacific Beach restaurant space. Like the original location, the new Luce will offer a casual yet sophisticated ambiance and a menu of approachable California cuisine complimented by a full bar with cocktails, spirits, wine and local beer. Vaught also took over the space that last housed Mama Mia's Italian restaurant for $1,725,000.
