Rise Southern Biscuits & Righteous Chicken To Open Several San Diego Locations

January 8, 2023

Expanding North Carolina-based comfort food chain Rise Southern Biscuits & Righteous Chicken has plans to open multiple units in San Diego.

Rise Southern Biscuits and Righteous Chicken started out in 2012 Rise Biscuits & Donuts before rebranding in 2021. Now a franchise, the company was originally founded in Durham, NC, by Chef Tom Ferguson, who passed away in early 2022 at the age of 57. Rise Southern Biscuits now has 18 locations, with more than 100 units in development around the country. The first California branch opened this past summer in the city of Thousand Oaks. In 2017, the brand received recognition in Food & Wine’s "Best Biscuits In The U.S." list.

Rise Southern Biscuits & Righteous Chicken has signed a franchise deal to bring the biscuit brand to San Diego. Franchisee Jason Kasid, who spent more than 25 years operating a family business in the convenience store industry, plans to open at least five Rise locations with potential sites in downtown San Diego, Mission Valley, Pacific Beach and the SDSU College area.

Rise Southern Biscuits & Righteous Chicken serves a menu of fried chicken sandwiches, breakfast sandwiches, biscuit & gravy plates, and donut offerings in a fast-casual environment. Highlights from the menu include the Sweet Country Blues sandwich with Cooper River Farms all-natural, clean label pork sausage on a glazed blueberry biscuit; the Southern Chicken fried chicken sandwich with pimento cheese and bacon; the Which Came First biscuit and gravy with fried chicken and a fried egg, topped with shredded cheddar cheese and green onion; and the Cheerwine classic donut throwback.
