San Diego's Lone Original Tommy's Hamburgers Location Announces Impending Closure

March 7, 2023

The lone San Diego location of Southern California-based classic burger chain Original Tommy's World Famous Hamburgers has announced its impending closure.

"It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that our Original Tommy's location in San Diego will be closing on March 14th," read the announcement posted on Original Tommy's Facebook page. "We want to express our sincere gratitude to the local community and residents of San Diego for their support and business over the years. It has been an honor to serve you and we are deeply saddened to have to close our San Diego location."

Original Tommy's is a simple hamburger shack fast food restaurant founded by Tom Koulax in Los Angeles, CA, in 1946. The company grew to more than 30 locations dotted around California and Nevada, offering a menu of burgers, fries, hot dogs, and the "World Famous" quarter pound chili cheeseburger. The only San Diego outpost at 7415 Clairemont Mesa Boulevard in Kearny Mesa has been in business for more than 20 years. It is reported the San Diego branch could not come to terms on its lease.

"We understand that this news may come as a disappointment to many of our loyal customers, but we want you to know that we are committed to continuing to provide our World-Famous chili burgers and other delicious menu items at our 32 other locations," continued the announcement. "The next closest locations are in Lake Forest (Orange County), CA and Corona, CA (both about an hour away), and we would love to see you there. Once again, thank you for your loyalty and support. We will always cherish the memories we made together in San Diego."
