Bica Mediterranean Cafe Opening In San Diego's Normal Heights

July 11, 2023

The chef duo behind Cops & Robbers Eat Club is opening Bica, a Mediterranean cafe unveiling later this month in San Diego's Normal Heights.

From chefs Charles Knowles and Manny Da Luz, Bica is a daytime cafe concept with a Mediterranean feel and casual atmosphere opening this July in the space last occupied by Old Cairo Hookah bar in San Diego's North Park. The daytime cafe will offer a menu featuring house smoked and cured fish, pickle plates, pastries, healthy fare and sandwiches made with Companion Bread. For beverages, there will be a menu of coffee and espresso drinks made with San Diego's own Provecho! Coffee. The eatery is also working on obtaining a beer and wine license. Bica will have an outdoor patio with generous seating, shade, and complimentary WiFi Internet.

"During the pre-pandemic period, my business partner Manny Daluz and I started a supper club called "Cops and Robbers" in San Francisco," explained Chef Charles Knowles. "We cooked what we wanted in unique locations like rooftops, backyards, and parks. There was no fixed menu for the guests, and we aimed to create an intimate dining experience. When we moved back to San Diego, it only felt natural to continue this venture. Upon arriving in San Diego, we had to make some adjustments to make our setup more accessible to a wider audience since we didn't have traditional jobs. it felt natural to evolve into a more casual open pop experience."

Ownership is also working on the opening of Butcher's Plate, which will be located in Market on 8th in National City. Butcher's Plate will serve rotisserie-style sandwiches and plates and salads that will change depending on availability from the farmers.

Bica will soft opening on July 15 at 3569 Adams Avenue in San Diego's Normal Heights. For more information, follow Bica on Instagram.
