Illinois-Based Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches To Open Location In San Diego's Pacific Beach

August 12, 2023

An Illinois-based sandwich chain with more than 2,500 locations, Jimmy John's is aggressively expanding into San Diego and will open a branch in Pacific Beach.

Founded by Jimmy John Liautaud in Charleston, IL, in 1983, Jimmy John's Sandwiches now has over 2,700 locations in 43 states around the U.S., with 98% of them being franchises. Jimmy John's menu of signature and customizable sandwiches are made with homemade bread that is freshly baked every four hours and locally purchased veggies and all-natural meats that are hand-sliced daily.

We announced last summer that Jimmy John's would be expanding into San Diego County and have since learned that franchisee Tali Burton, whose Burton Foods company opened 15 Dunkin' Donuts locations around San Diego, has signed an exclusive contract to bring 27 branches of Jimmy John's to San Diego County. Burton Foods will soon open joint locations of Dunkin' Donuts and Jimmy John's around San Diego County with the first branch unveiling later this year on the base floor of the Topaz Apartments near San Diego State University in San Diego's College Area. Another outpost of the combined concepts is planned for the 605 C Street Building, which has been in the process of construction in downtown San Diego since 2019. The College Area branch is expected to open by year's end, while the downtown outpost will likely emerge at some point in 2024.

Another combined Dunkin' Donuts and Jimmy John's will open within Pacific Plaza shopping center in San Diego's Pacific Beach. While the Dunkin Donuts will install in the space that last housed a Starbuck's, Jimmy John's is opening in the nearby space previously occupied by a branch of Einstein Bros. Bagels. Jimmy John's serves a menu of "Freaky Fast" sandwiches, including the Spicy East Coast Italian with double Genoa Salami, double capicola, provolone cheese, hot peppers, sauce, lettuce, tomato, and onion; and the Jimmy Cubano with smoked ham, bacon, provolone, sliced pickle, mayo and dijon mustard.

Jimmy John's has had a some controversies over the course of its near four decades tenure. In 2011, photos emerged of Jimmy John's founded posing with dead big game animals, including elephants, rhinos, lynxes and zebras, which resulted in viral criticism by animal rights groups. In early 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration sent an FDA warning letter to the company detailing evidence from five outbreaks of human infections with e-coli. The letter claimed that evidence demonstrated that the company engaged in a pattern of receiving and selling spoiled produce, specifically clover sprouts and cucumbers.

Jimmy John's is anticipated to open in late 2023/early 2024 at 1772-F Garnet Avenue in San Diego's Pacific Beach. For more information, visit jimmyjohns.com.
