San Diego's Historic Roberto's Taco Shop Opening New Location In East County

August 10, 2023

Opening later this year in San Diego's East County is a new location of Roberto's Taco Shop, the 59-year-old Mexican food chain that many believe invented the iconic California burrito.

Mexico-native Roberto & Dolores Robledo operated a tortilleria and cafe in San Ysidro before opening their first Roberto's Taco Shop in National City in 1964. With the help of their 13 children and extended family, they grew the concept to a chain of more than 60 locations spread around San Diego and Nevada.

The popularity of Roberto's throughout America's Finest City resulted in many imitators popping up and using the "-bertos" suffix, with names like Rigoberto's, Alberto's, Filiberto's, Hilberto's and others. Rumor has it that the famed California burrito originated at an unknown -berto's named restaurant in San Diego in the 1980s, which some surmise was the original Roberto's.

San Diego's newest Roberto's will open in the space that last housed Tu Taco Shop in the Riverwalk area of San Diego's East County city of Santee. Like other branches, the restaurant will serve fast-casual Mexican staples like tacos, burritos, smothered fries, nachos, tostadas, quesadillas, tortas, enchiladas, and combination plates. The eatery will be open from 7am to midnight daily.

Roberto's Taco Shop is expected to open soon at 9740 Cuyamaca Street in Santee. For more information, visit robertostacoshop.com.
