Basic Bar & Pizza Relocating In San Diego's East Village After Nearly Two Decades

November 10, 2023

After almost two decades in the same spot in San Diego's East Village, Basic Bar & Pizza is moving next year.

In 2006, East Coast transplant Jon Mangini opened BASIC Bar/Pizza in a 5,000 square-foot, 1912-era warehouse building space on the corner of 10th Avenue and J Street in San Diego East Village. The New Haven-style pizzeria quickly garnered a loyal following for its oblong, wood-fired pizza and became a hotspot before and after Petco Park events.

As the flagship concept of URBN Restaurant Inc., BASIC has been frequently recognized as one of the top pizza spots in San Diego and has been featured in high profile media outlets such as The New York Times, MTV, and The Los Angeles Times, to name a few. BASIC's sister concepts include URBN Coal Fired Pizza restaurants in North Park, Vista, El Cajon, Encinitas, and within One Paseo in Del Mar.

Bar Basic Pizza's lease reportedly expires next year and they are currently unable to come to an agreement with the building's landlord. It is rumored the landlord may have an interest in opening his own restaurant concept in the longtime Bar Basic space. If they are unable to come to terms on a new lease, which seems unlikely, Bar Basic plans to move as early as April 2024 but possibly after the 2024 Padres season. It is expected the New Haven-style pizza restaurant will relocate to a base floor unit within the Park 12 mixed-use high rise complex adjacent to Petco Park.

Basic Pizza & Bar is located at 410 10th Avenue in San Diego's East Village. For more information, visit barbasic.com.
