Denver-Based Smashburger Returns To San Diego's La Jolla

November 28, 2023

After shuttering all but one of the San Diego branches over the past few years, Denver-based burger chain Smashburger has opened a new location in La Jolla.

Founded in 2007 by restaurant industry veterans Rick Schaden and Tom Ryan, Smashburger is a fast-service chain offering a menu based around "smashed" flattop-pressed ground chuck burgers. The chain previously had locations in La Jolla, East Village, Liberty Station, Mission Valley and Del Mar before closing all but an El Cajon outpost.

In early 2014, the local franchisee that operated the six San Diego locations filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Philippines-based, quick-service operator Jollibee Foods Corporation bought a 40% stake in the Smashburger parent company in 2015, and as of December 2018, Jollibee acquired 100% of the company. Smashburger currently has over 200 restaurant sited around the United States and Canada.

Smashburger has now opened its second San Diego location within Westfield UTC Mall in La Jolla. The 2,355 square-foot restaurant offers indoor seating for 38 and outdoor seating for 20 guests. Like other branches, expect a menu of certified Angus beef burgers smashed on a hot seasoned grill, grilled and crispy chicken sandwiches, turkey and black bean burgers and fresh crisp salads. Signature side items include crispy Brussels sprouts and SmashFries. The restaurant will also serve a selection of beers, soft drinks, and hand-spun milkshakes made with Häagen-Dazs ice cream.

Smashburger is now open at 4577 La Jolla Village Drive, Suite #1233, within Westfield UTC mall in La Jolla. For more information, visit smashburger.com.
