San Diego's Award-Winning Second Chance Beer Company Closing Carmel Mountain Brewery & North Park Tasting Room

November 2, 2023

After eight years in business, Second Chance Beer Company is closing its Carmel Mountain brewery and shuttering its tasting room in San Diego's North Park.

Marty Mendiola and Virginia Morrison seized their second chance when they started Second Chance Beer Company in San Diego's Carmel Mountain region in 2015. The award-winning, independent 30 bbl production craft brewery launched their first satellite tasting room on 30th Street in North Park in 2017.

Both the Second Chance Beer main brewery and Second Chance Beer Lounge in San Diego's North Park will close for business by the end of the month. The North Park closure will also mark the temporary end for Parabola Coffee, which operates from inside the tap room and is looking to relocate to a new space. There is no word on the reason for Second Chance Beer's closure but the brand hopes to continue operating by contract brewing its line of craft beers at another local facility.

"We're devastated at the loss of our tasting rooms, especially because of the impact on our team, their livelihoods and the loss to the communities we serve," wrote Second Chance co-owner Virginia Morrison. "Dog adoptions, weddings, baby showers, celebrations of life, retirement parties, fundraisers, happiest of hours...they've all been held in our spaces. One day, perhaps in the not-so-distant future, we hope to have these spaces of service again."

The last day of business at the Carmel Mountain brewery is expected to be Wednesday, November 22, while the North Park tasting room will stay open through Sunday, November 26. Those interested in purchasing brewing equipment and/or taking over Second Chance Beer Lounge in North Park can contact the company by email

Longtime 91X disc jockey Danielle Stuht recently left her position at the San Diego radio station after more than seven years to take a job as event coordinator of Second Chance Beer Company. She had only started this past Monday. Ironically, she was subsequently replaced by the founder of San Diego Beer News.

Second Chance Beer Company is located at 15378 Avenue of Science #222 in Carmel Valley and Second Chance Beer Lounge sits at 4045 30th Street, Suite A, in San Diego's North Park. For more information, visit secondchancebeer.com.
