Longtime Chef Of Michelin-Starred Sushi Tadokoro To Open Japanese Omakase Restaurant Yakitori Tsuta In San Diego's Kearny Mesa

February 29, 2024

Opening later this year on Convoy Street in Kearny Mesa is Yakitori Tsuta, an omakase-focused Japanese restaurant from a longtime chef of San Diego's Michelin-starred Sushi Tadokoro.

Chef Tatsuro Tsuchiya has been the second in command under owner Takeaki Tadokoro at San Diego's Michelin-starred Sushi Tadokoro for the past few years. Prior to joining the Old Town sushi hotspot, he honed his skewer game at Kearny Mesa's Yakitori Yakyudori. He has also recently led the kitchen at Yakitori Hino on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard.

Tsuchiya is now branching off on his own for the opening of Yakitori Tsuta. He has leased the unit currently occupied by Two Hands Seoul Corn Dogs within the Sunrise Towne Centre shopping plaza, which also houses Nijiya Market and Koon Thai in San Diego's Kearny Mesa. Named after the Japanese word for "ivy", the incoming restaurant will have a chef's counter and only one table.

At Yakitori Tsuta, expect an omakase-style experience with more than a dozen course and a menu centered around charcoal grilled yakitori skewers, as well as other Japanese appetizers, soups, noodle dishes, entrees and desserts. From the bar, expect a selection of beer, sake and soju.

"I will be more focusing on omakase (chef’s choice course)," explained Tsuchiya. "I'll use basically chicken and vegetables, no beef, pork or fish. More authentic Japanese yakitori I’ll serve."

Yakitori Tsuta is anticipated to open by early summer at 3860 Convoy Street, Suite 100, in San Diego's Kearny Mesa.
