Will Italy's Most Popular Sandwich Shop Open A Location In San Diego? All’Antico Vinaio's Massive Expansion Could Include America's Finest City

February 12, 2024

Italy's most famous sandwich shop, All' Antico Vinaio may be eyeing San Diego for a potential new location.

All’Antico Vinaio, which translates to "ancient wine merchant," was founded as a wine room in Florence, Italy, in 1989 by the Mazzanti family. Joined by Tommaso Mazzanti in 2006, the store was transformed from a popular sandwich spot to one of Firenze's most famous culinary destinations. Known for its round-the-block lines, square slices of fresh-baked schiacciata bread, and sandwiches piled with cured meats and cheeses, the eatery now has several locations in the United States.

All’Antico Vinaio opened its first U.S. outlet in New York City in 2021, and has since launched three more locations in Manhattan. The company has twice hosted pop-ups in Los Angeles but last fall secured a space in Venice Beach to launch their first West Coast brick-and-mortar eatery.
Backed by longtime restaurateur and MasterChef judge, Joe Bastianich, All’Antico Vinaio has been rapidly expanding its brand around the United States, recently opening a branch in Las Vegas and also working on a new location in Los Angeles's Koreatown. We at SanDiegoVille have been active in the company's Instagram DMs, and they've indicated a San Diego location could be in the future. The problem is Bastianich may not have the best view of America's Finest City after an outpost of his famed Pizzeria Mozza concept lasted less than a year in downtown San Diego.

So how do we get All’Antico Vinaio to open a sandwich shop in San Diego? The company is quite responsive on their Instagram page, even though they have nearly a million followers. As such, we urge San Diegans to send a message letting them know how much we want an All’Antico Vinaio in San Diego County.
All’Antico Vinaio offers a menu centered around authentic Italian sandwiches made on fresh Tuscan flatbread called a schiacciata. Sandwiches include the La Favolosa with salame toscana, pecorino cream, artichoke cream, and spicy eggplant; La Paradiso with mortadella, stracciatella, pistachio cream and pistachios; and La Schiacciata di Manolo with prosciutto cotto, mozzarella, truffle cream and spicy eggplant.
