Rei De Gado Brazilian Steakhouse Closed In Downtown San Diego Following Fire

July 26, 2024

San Diego's 25-year-old Rei De Gado Brazilian Steakhouse is closed for the foreseeable future following a fire that caused substantial damage.

A fire broke out Friday at around 7:27pm in the kitchen of Rei De Gado Brazilian Steakhouse at 939 Fourth Avenue in downtown San Diego. The flames extended up the four-story building and smoke was seen billowing from the rooftop.
The occurrence led to the evacuation of two different buildings, including one at Bloom Nightclub that had 1,200 guests visiting for Comic-Con attending HBO “Penguin Lounge” activation. The event at Bloom was reopened 90 minutes later.
The blaze was contained in about an hour and no civilians or firefighters were injured. The large fire damaged the roof and the building's air conditioning units. San Diego Fire Department officials said the San Diego Sheriff's Department's Bomb Arson unit was on scene and investigating the fire. San Diego County Health was also notified. The Red Cross was also at the scene, aiding the 50 people who were displaced from neighboring apartments and Airbnbs.

Rei De Gado restaurant had extensive damage from the fire and resulting smoke and will remain closed for a prolonged period. The restaurant has been a mainstay in downtown San Diego since 1999 and was once the city's sole Brazilian steakhouse.
