A well-known professional surfer is opening a new Hawaiian-themed bar & restaurant in San Diego County.
Benji Weatherley, who along with his close friend Kelly Slater was part of the 'Momentum Generation' of professional surfers, has taken over the building that last housed Schooner Station Pizzeria & Sports Pub in San Diego's North County city of Encinitas. The pro surfer and podcaster will soon convert the restaurant space, which was previously set to be a branch of Swagyu, to become a Hawaii-inspired bar and eatery named Breakers Café Bar & Grill.
Breakers will bring the flavors of the Hawaiian Islands to life, accompanied by family-oriented fun such as live Hawaiian music, outdoor games, and an indoor arcade, as well as a full bar. The 2,300 square-foot indoor/outdoor space will reflect Weatherley’s Hawaiian upbringing, with a design inspired by his mother's famed Volcom House in North Shore Oahua, as well as feature nostalgic nods to the local community, including vintage signs that celebrate the history of Encinitas.
Weatherley is not the only extreme sports star working on opening a restaurant in Encinitas. San Diego native and skateboard legend Tony Hawk has been in the process of developing Chick & Hawk restaurant for almost three years.
Breakers Café Bar & Grill is anticipated to open in early 2025 at 481 Santa Fe Drive in San Diego's North County city of Encinitas.
