Elizabeth Scalice, a passionate historic preservationist, founded Architectural Salvage from a small house in Encinitas, eventually expanding to a brick-and-mortar location in Little Italy in 1996. The store quickly became a haven for those interested in the reuse and restoration of period pieces, promoting sustainable consumerism through its eclectic collection.
Carrie Clark purchased the remainder of Elizabeth's inventory in January and have been focused on getting the entirety of their items catalogued and put onto the website so that people can shop from home. They have also reopened Architectural Salvage in a portion of a nearly 10,000 square-foot warehouse building on Main Street in the heart of San Diego's historic Barrio Logan community.
Earlier this year, Architectural Salvage announced the closure of its Little Italy store after nearly three decades in business. Over the years, the shop attracted a loyal following, including high-profile customers like Barbra Streisand, Bill Murray, and Tom Waits. Many of its reclaimed treasures also found new homes in local San Diego restaurants.
"For 28 years, we've been an integral part of San Diego's story, helping to restore pieces of its heart and soul," said owner Elizabeth Scalice in January 2024. "Saying goodbye is bittersweet, but I’m filled with pride and gratitude for our community’s support."

Much like its previous location, the new space features an expansive collection of vintage and one-of-a-kind items, including everything from bathtubs and light fixtures to jumbo skeleton keys and stained glass windows. These treasures are sourced from various places from near and far, including the markets of Budapest and the streets of Egypt.
