Founded in 2007 by Bruce Cohen and Jose Munoz, Boomerangs opened in Wilson Plaza, Clairemont, with a focus on gourmet burgers made from high-quality Angus beef. The restaurant quickly became a neighborhood favorite, drawing in locals with its expansive menu featuring burgers, sandwiches, salads, and other comfort food classics. Over the years, the establishment expanded its offerings by introducing a full bar, eventually boasting a curated selection of over 1,500 whiskies, which earned it a loyal following among whiskey enthusiasts.
Despite its success and strong customer base, Boomerangs faced challenges in its later years. The restaurant’s ownership had to navigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which hit many local businesses hard, particularly in the food and beverage industry. Additionally, Boomerangs encountered personal struggles, as Cohen and Munoz dealt with significant health issues that made it increasingly difficult to continue operations.
Boomerangs Gourmet Burger and Whiskey Joint served its final meals on October 4, 2024, marking the end of a nearly two-decade run. In an extremely succinct message to their patrons, the owners announced their closure on the same day.
