Far Corner Bar & Pizzeria Taking Over Longtime Bar Basic Pizza Space In San Diego's East Village

Basic Bar & Pizza is set to relocate soon within San Diego's East Village after nearly two decades at its original spot, with a new concept called Far Corner taking over the 10th Avenue space.

Originally opened in 2006 by East Coast transplant Jon Mangini, BASIC Bar/Pizza became a fixture of East Village nightlife. Modeled after BAR in New Haven, Connecticut, the New Haven-style pizzeria quickly gained popularity for its distinctive oblong, wood-fired pies. The pizzeria and bar, housed in a nearly 120-year-old building at 410 Tenth Avenue, long served as a go-to pre- and post-game hangout for Petco Park events.
With BASIC's lease expiring this year, the landlord and his family decided to move in a new direction, replacing the pizzeria with Far Corner, a new bar and restaurant all their own. The upcoming concept, created by Maxwell Senescall, whose family has owned the building since the '80s, Karen Berry, and Phillip Senescall of Professional Maintenance Systems janitorial service, is slated to open in January 2025.

The menu at Far Corner will be centered around pizza alongside a full bar offering cocktails, beer, wine, and spirits. Pizza pro Fred Santos, who owns Square Pizza in Pacific beach, will be tasked with consulting on the restaurant's pizza program.

The main area of the 4,000-square-foot space is intended for mingling and cocktails, featuring a bar, DJ booth, and pool table. There will also be a lounge with leather seats and cocktail tables, as well as a more relaxed dining area with another bar, banquettes, and a pizza oven. The whole space will seat around 140 guests and will be open daily from 11am to 1am.

Formerly the longtime home of Basic Pizza, which is relocating to the nearby Park 12 development, the building is undergoing a complete renovation that will preserve some of its history as an airplane part manufacturing plant. Senescall wants Far Corner to be more than just a spot for a quick, pre-baseball-game bite.

BASIC will remain open through October, with the possibility of extending through mid-November, before relocating to a new base floor unit within the Park 12 mixed-use high-rise, adjacent to Petco Park. The new location is anticipated to open just in time for the Padres' 2025 season. Designed by Avent Design and built by CLTVT, the 5,000-square-foot space will feature the same signature New Haven-style pizzas, including the beloved mashed potato and bacon pie, along with a bar serving beer, wine, and cocktails.
As the flagship of URBN Restaurant Inc., BASIC has earned a reputation as one of San Diego’s top pizza destinations, with recognition from outlets like The New York Times, MTV, and The Los Angeles Times. Other URBN concepts include URBN Coal Fired Pizza locations across North Park, Vista, El Cajon, Encinitas, and Del Mar's One Paseo.
