The SoNo festival has made an incredible impact since its inception in 2010, raising over $810,000 to support McKinley Elementary's vital programs in Spanish, art, ceramics, dance, and library services. Last year’s event marked a record-breaking success, generating more than $90,000. This year, the all-volunteer-run festival aims to build on that momentum, offering an unforgettable experience for the over 25,000 attendees expected to join.
At the heart of the SoNo Fest is the Chili Cook-Off, where over 30 of San Diego's top chefs and restaurants compete for the title of best chili in the city. Guests can indulge in a variety of unique and creative chili recipes, ranging from traditional beef and bean combinations to inventive dishes like Pho-inspired chili, green curry Thai chili, and vegan southwestern options. Festivalgoers can purchase a commemorative ceramic bowl or festival mug for $30, which includes five chili tastings, or opt for a paper bowl for $25.
Participating restaurants vying for chili stardom include Ales Tales, Bivouac Ciderworks, Common Stock Hospitality, Cori Pastificio Trattoria, Del’s Hideout, Dunedin New Zealand Eats, Finca Tapas, Gnarly Girl Pizza, Happy Medium, Harland Brewing, Kairoa, Key and Cleaver, Original 40, Shank and Bone, Sepulveda, The Smoking Gun, Tribute Pizza, The Wise Ox, ThirtyOne31 and many more.
For those looking to quench their thirst, the event's expansive beer garden will feature over 20 local breweries, including renowned names like TapRoom Beer Co., Pizza Port, Modern Times, and Coronado Brewing. Cider lovers can rejoice as Bivouac Ciderworks brings back its popular cider bar, while non-beer options such as hard iced tea, kombucha, and spirits provide even more variety. Drinks are available for $10 per pour.

Beyond the chili and beer, the SoNo Fest offers a host of other attractions. A holiday market showcases nearly 30 local artisans selling handmade goods, from jewelry and home décor to clothing and stationery perfect for unique holiday gifts. Live entertainment will take center stage on two music platforms, with performances by local bands such as The Creepy Creeps, Tamar Berk, and The Sands. Meanwhile, the Kids Zone will feature family-friendly activities, including performances by local youth groups, a bounce house, face painting, and a craft table run by McKinley’s fifth graders.
This all-ages event is not only a celebration of local talent and creativity but also a vital fundraiser for McKinley Elementary School. The funds raised ensure that the school can continue to provide its students with enriching programs that are no longer covered by the school district. From ceramics to Spanish lessons, the programs funded by SoNo Fest give hundreds of children the opportunity to expand their educational horizons and prepare for the future.
