Kiku Room Listening Bar Opening In Original Casbah Space In San Diego's Little Italy

San Diego's nightlife is about to gain a distinctive new addition with the arrival of Kiku Room Listening Bar, which combines eclectic music, classic cocktails, and a moody yet welcoming ambiance at the original home of the historic Casbah in Little Italy.

The name "Kiku" is derived from the Japanese verb meaning "to listen," capturing the essence of this concept inspired by "jazu kissa," or jazz cafés, which emphasize music as the central experience. Music at Kiku Room will be presented through various formats, including vinyl, reel-to-reel, and curated playlists, creating an atmosphere where guests are invited to truly immerse themselves in sound while enjoying the space's neighborhood bar feel. The venue occupies a space steeped in history, having been the original location of The Casbah in the 1990s, a cornerstone of San Diego’s live music culture.

Kiku Room seeks to balance this legacy with a fresh vision, offering a reprieve from the maximalist trends of modern bars. Its dark, understated design is meant to set the tone for an approachable yet sophisticated environment, paired with a cocktail menu of timeless classics curated by a Consortium Holdings alum.

The bar is the creation of Robert Richter and Paul Scappechio, whose combined expertise in design, hospitality, and music drives the concept. Richter, an eight-year Navy veteran and owner of Flur Architectural Metals, brings a passion for functional design and craftsmanship, showcased in projects like Paradisea and Underbelly Ramen. Scappechio has over a decade of experience in food and beverage around the globe, and is drawing inspiration from hidden bars and eclectic music to inform Kiku Room’s identity.

Kiku Room Listening Bar is set to open in early summer 2025 at 2812 Kettner Boulevard in San Diego's Little Italy. For more information, visit kikuroomsd.com.
