A native of Cave Creek, Arizona, Matusz etched his name into San Diego's sports history during his time at University of San Diego (USD) from 2006 to 2008. As a junior in 2008, he led the NCAA in strikeouts with 141, posted a 1.71 ERA - fourth-best in Torero history - and was named the West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year. He also earned All-American honors and became USD's all-time leader in career strikeouts, with a record-breaking 17-strikeout game against Harvard that season. His efforts propelled USD to its highest-ever national ranking of No. 4 that year.
Matusz's collegiate success culminated in his selection as the fourth overall pick in the 2008 MLB draft by the Baltimore Orioles, the second-highest draft position in USD history. Over his eight-year MLB career, he primarily played with the Orioles, contributing as both a starter and reliever. His tenure included helping Baltimore reach the postseason in 2012, 2014, and 2016. After leaving the majors, Matusz continued to play professionally in Mexico and with the Long Island Ducks.
The University of San Diego announced his passing with a heartfelt statement: "USD Athletics Mourns the Passing of Torero Legend Brian Matusz. Matusz, a record-breaking pitcher and former first-round MLB draft pick, leaves behind a lasting legacy at USD and beyond." Kimya Massey, USD's Associate Vice President and Executive Director of Athletics, said, "All of us in the USD community are heartbroken tonight to hear of Brian's passing. We give our heartfelt condolences to his family and all of his teammates from his time here at USD and beyond. His heart, passion, and genuine love for the game and his teammates was always felt and will be missed. We hope everyone keeps his family in their prayers at this time."
Coach Brock Ungricht also paid tribute, stating, "Brian was one of the best players to ever wear a Torero uniform. His dedication to the USD community and passion for the game of baseball were evident to all who knew him. Brian's unexpected passing leaves a void in our hearts, but his legacy will continue to inspire us, both on and off the field. We will forever be grateful for his friendship and unwavering support of San Diego baseball. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family."
The Orioles paid their respects on social media, stating, "Our hearts are heavy tonight as we mourn the passing of former Oriole, Brian Matusz. A staple in our clubhouse from 2009-2016, Brian was beloved throughout Birdland, and his passion for baseball and our community was unmatched. He dedicated his time to connecting with any fan he could, was a cherished teammate, and always had a smile on his face. Brian’s family and loved ones are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time."
