La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, a cherished San Diego coastal resort with nearly a century of history, has ushered in a new culinary chapter with the appointment of chef Ananda Bareño as executive chef. The announcement comes amid a sweeping $60 million renovation of the 21-acre oceanfront property, signaling a transformative era for both its facilities and its food program.
Bareño, who previously led the kitchen at Alila Marea Beach Resort following the departure of chef Claudette Zepeda, brings a globally influenced, ingredient-driven approach shaped by her experience cooking across Europe, South America, and the Middle East. In her new role, she will oversee all culinary operations across the club's properties, including The Marine Room and The Shores Restaurant, while also leading the development of a new restaurant, bar, and market scheduled to open later this year as part of the resort's broader transformation.
The spring menus at both The Marine Room and The Shores Restaurant already showcase Bareño’s style, emphasizing seasonal ingredients, sustainability, and storytelling through food. Dishes include Tasmanian ocean trout with coconut salsa macha and cassis chayote, rose snapper with piperade and garden sorrel sauce, Cascade Creek lamb chops with citrus labneh and mint chimichurri, and Japanese A5 Wagyu strip steak with onion brûlé and potato pavé. A refined caviar service has also been introduced, offering guests a more elevated and luxurious experience. The Marine Room has complemented its culinary offerings with live music every Wednesday evening in the lounge.
Working alongside Amanda Cohen, the club’s director of food and beverage, Bareño is playing a central role in shaping the future of the resort’s dining landscape. The ongoing renovations, designed by Studio UNLTD - known for its previous work on The Marine Room and Walnut Lounge - will preserve the property's Spanish Colonial charm while introducing modern coastal sophistication. Enhancements will include refreshed outdoor dining spaces, an upgraded patio and pool deck, and a newly conceived dining destination that reflects the club's legacy and future ambitions.
