The ownership transition marks a new chapter for the beloved bar, which has long been known for its old-school atmosphere, stiff drinks, and cash-only policy. Lancers will retain much of its iconic dive bar character, including maintaining the same longtime staff members, with little changes under new owners.
Lancers is now operated by a new trio: Chelsea Roop and Lisa Johnson - two longtime Lancers bartenders with a combined 30 years behind the stick - and Tom Logsdon, founder of The Balboa Bar & Grill, a burger destination with locations in Bankers Hill and Chula Vista. The group assumed ownership from Marc "Bubba" Rosenberg, who ran the bar for over 45 years.
The new team has expressed a desire to preserve Lancers' nostalgic charm. Canned beers will now join bottled options, additional non-alcoholic beverages are in the works, and while the bar remains cash-only for now, they're working on integrating credit card processing soon.
Lancers is one of several classic San Diego watering holes to see new stewardship in recent years. Similar transitions have occurred at Aero Club in Middletown, Gilly’s in North Park, Club Marina in Point Loma, The Harp in Ocean Beach, and Hearth House in La Mesa, where efforts have been made to honor neighborhood history while breathing in new life.
Lancers Cocktails invites patrons old and new to raise a glass to its future - and its past - starting with a May 1 day-long party. Sponsored by Fernet Branca, the celebration features $4 Fernet shots, $8 Fernet & Miller High Life combos, and 50% off select beers.
The Lancers Cocktails is located at 4671 Park Boulevard in San Diego's University Heights. For more information, follow Lancers on Instagram.
